Our History

Where do we come from?

Bodmin Community Church which is situated in the heart of Cornwall began in Bodmin in 2007.

The origins of the church can be traced back to when worshippers from the Bodmin area who regularly attended Grace Community Church in Morval, near Looe, were encouraged to form a Community Group in Lanivet to provide mutual support and encouragement during the week.

The Lanivet Community Group gradually grew in number and began developing a heart for reaching the locality with the good news of Jesus Christ. It was therefore agreed that members should pray for God’s direction for the period of one year in order to know His will for them.

After 12 months, members were unanimous about establishing a new work for Christ in Bodmin and our first official church service in the town took place on Sunday 4th November 2007 at Robartes Junior School.  This venue was kindly offered to us as a venue by the then Headmaster, Mr Ewan Murray.

In January 2008 we started holding weekly Sunday morning services with a committed children’s ministry running during the service using classroom areas provided by the school.

In September of 2008, Richard Powell was selected by a panel set up by Grace Community Church Morval as an Associate Pastor with a specific responsibility over the Bodmin church plant. Richard was later appointed in 2012 as Senior Pastor of the Grace Community Church Family of Churches and continued to serve Bodmin Community Church as Pastor until he left in 2017.

One of the elders, Ian Thompson, served as interim pastor while a new pastor was sought. Simon Smallwood was appointed as the new pastor from 1st August, 2019.
